It is through the ground that Hashem reveals the past to us that we may remember our ancient rituals, our mitzvot, and the thousands of years of our existance in the Land of Israel. Hashem chose a boy of pure heart to be his warrior king. David HaMelech who went to battle for Israel and defeating the worst of her enemies. Would it be the time now to ask for an anointed one in these times? Will I continue to hope to see King Mashiach yet in my days? I pray for the deliverence of Israel from the hands of her oppressors. An Archaeoligical find in 2008 of the original clay vessels used in the practice of ritual anointing of Jewish kings completely preserved with the oil still inside them, though missing the sweetness of the oil’s fragrance, was the inspiration for this post.

We are truly blessed with Hashem our G-d,who reveals from the earth these Holy vessels used for annointing. We learn the orgins of this practice from the TANAKH as it is described in many parshiyot. Dear Captain Ziv Shilon,

Thank you Captain Shilon .

Thank you for having a true heart and serving to defend your beloved people and land.

I thank God for you and all the brave Soldiers of Israel.

As I was recently viewing my Facebook posts, I came across of what happened to you while in battle with the ruthless terrorists .

My heart goes out to you and all your brothers and sisters in The Israeli Army .

Although I am not at your side to see to any of your needs Captain Shilon,
I just want to remind you that there are so many people in the world that truly do care of what happens to you and your family in Israel .
Yet, there is someone here that strives to do their best to be for Israel especially during these critical junctures in time the whole world is facing.

If there is anything I can do to ease your pain or just to bring you a great smile , please do let me know ?

Captain Shilon, I very much would like to send you a small thank you gift in the mail . If it is possible to do so, provide me a mailing address in Israel so I can gladly send it off to you soon.

I do pray to The God of Your Forefathers that you and all the Soldiers of Israel may be delivered a swift and mighty victory over your enemies especially in these days.

Redeeming The Settlers In Pursuit of Justice Despite The Leadership

Most of the leadership in Israel … You think they would have learned from the 2005 unjust removal of their own.

Yet, we still continue to witness a failed policy for broken and unfulfilled promises for peace

in The Land of Israel.

I have a couple of questions for Israel’s leadership.

Are ‘The Settlers’ not also human? Are they also not flesh and blood of your own?

I tell myself as Israel’s leadership continues to plan and orchestrate even more uprootings …

The Land of Israel is not theirs to uproot their own brethren from. Period.

The Land of Israel is God’s Land (as is everything in The Universe) that is granted to Israel on the conditon of Israel fulfilling The Torah Commandments.

The Land of Israel is the interitance to The Children of Ya’akov on their condition of being faithfully true to The God of Their Forefathers.

I also ask myself if the leadership governing Israel is devoid of this basic biblical understanding of to Whom The Land of Israel belongs.

Yet, what I perceive is occurring with The Holy people that call Israel home beyond ‘The Green Line’ is the stripping away of their God given right to their inheritance.

And that does not seem to be a problem for most of Israel’s leadership.

That is a grave and unjust choice they are making for themselves.

If most of Israel’s leadership continues to forsake their own brethren as they did like in the 2005 catastrophe that was Gush Katif, the question I pose anyone reading this is :

What do you feel would be an appropriate and just settlement for the pain, hurt and anguish ‘The Settlers’ have been dealt with and still are living thru from all the past expulsions ?

It is quite ironic to see that there is a group that do believe in The Promises of Eretz Israel according to The Deed that is outlined in The Torah.

Yet, there is another group that believes it is simply acceptable to unashamedly continue to uproot their own brothers.

If you asked me … What would be a fair recompense for such policy toward The Settlers?

Would not a complete role-reversal where everything the leadership thought they could so easily implement against The Faithful of Israel was unexpectedly, divinely done unto them instead?

Maybe the people that believe they can so easily continue to uproot their own need to be dealt the very same plan they seek to carry out .

Midda Kenegged Midda. Measure for Measure.

It is about time for a righteous reversal of roles.

Maybe the leadership needs to be put in the position of those uprooted by their unjust decrees and feel what ‘The Settlers’ have felt for so long.

Only in that way can there come a righteous vindication for all those that believe that The Land is inherently good because they do believe in their inheritance of The Land according to The Torah.

They believe in God .

And there is only one true, enduring and perfect justice.

” A certain man of Zorah, named Manoah, from the clan of the Danites, had a wife who was sterile and remained childless. The angel of the LORD appeared to her and said, “You are sterile and childless, but you are going to conceive and have a son. Now see to it that you drink no wine or other fermented drink and that you do not eat anything unclean, because you will conceive and give birth to a son. No razor may be used on his head, because the boy is to be a Nazirite, set apart to God from birth, and he will begin the deliverance of Israel from the hands of the Philistines.”

The Story of Samson

When recalling of the great heroes of the Hebrew Scripture, we all seem to recall great men of valour because of the concern they had for the well-being of their fellow Israelite brethern. Yet we often do not contemplate that they too were very much human and had their moments of downfall as well. Despite any trying challenges that came upon them or punishment for misdeeds of choice, their love of God in the end is what prevailed .

That is what made them great.

When I reflect of such true and moving accounts of dedication, care and love it also grants me strength and courage in the life of my own that there is always a door open to return to God even if it is at the very end.

Divinely girded with strength and tied unto Service to The Lord, what made a particular man from The Tribe of Dan such a hero in the end?

Samson’s heroic act of self-sacrifice brought back honor to his people Israel and gave redeeming sanctification to His God at the end.

When we hear of the Biblical character of Samson, most of us recall him for his super human strength as a Warrior for his people The Israelites. Yet, his strength was tied to his fidelity to God .

Despite the mistake of following a woman of Israel’s enemies that lead to his tragic capture, stripping away of strength, torture and death within the camp of the philistine enemy, Samson’s choice of self-sacrifice in order to bring the destruction of enemy camp brought not only decisive victory to his people Israel it restored the honor due to His God.

“ And Samson called unto the LORD, and said: ‘O Lord GOD, remember me, I pray Thee, and strengthen me, I pray Thee, only this once, O God, that I may be this once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.’ And Samson took fast hold of the two middle pillars upon which the house rested, and leaned upon them, the one with his right hand, and the other with his left. And Samson said: ‘Let me die with the Philistines.’ And he bent with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people that were therein. So the dead that he slew at his death were more than they that he slew in his life. “

What can we learn and take from Samson’s example?

That although most people do err in deed throughout life, there is always hope even in the last moments of life for a return to peace before Our Creator.

No matter how bad we may have erred or fallen off the proper righteous path, The Story of Shimshon - Samson – should remind all of us that as bad as we may have led our life in this world, it is never too late to return and bring honor to Our Creator.

And Samson is such a testament that continues living as a heroic example for many to remember, learn and become inspired from.

An Extra Insight on Samson

What Makes Samson Such a Hero?

When Yaakov Avinu (Jacob, The Father of The Twelve Tribes of Israel) blesses Dan, the sages tell us that through Ruach HaKodesh (Divine Inspiration), Yaakov saw Samson wreaking havoc upon the Philistines, and thought that he was the Messiah. Only after seeing Samson die did a disappointed Yaakov realize that Samson was not the Messiah, and thus he uttered the words in our parsha ( Torah Reading Portion), “I waited for your salvation, Oh Lord.”

Even for those not so well-versed in the Bible, Samson has become a household name. He is the stereotype of the ‘mighty hero’. Is this characterization a correct one, or a misconception of the masses?

What gives Samson his superstar status, making him easily the most popular and widely know Judge? If it is for his brute physical strength, the sages surprise us by telling us that Samson was lame. Why would they say such a thing, if not to remove from our minds the image of a macho-muscle-man?

Perhaps one might want to say that Samson fulfilled the definition of ”hero” (gibor, in Hebrew) according to Pirke Avot: “Who is a gibor? He who conquers his evil inclination.” Without delving too deeply into Samson’s deeds and motives with women, one can safely say that he was not exactly a symbol of the tzadeek (Righteous Person) who overcame his yeitzer (evil inclination). The sages tell us clearly: “Samson followed after his eyes, and thus his eyes were gouged out by the Philistines.”

Must we then conclude that the popularity surrounding the figure of Samson today is due to the fact that somehow, his persona “caught on” more than other heroic figures in the Bible? Is Samson’s popularity amongst the masses simply a product of “media hype”? After all, Devora, Yiftach, Gideon and every other Judge certainly killed a lot more of the enemy than Samson did.

Killing a thousand Philistines with the jawbone of an ass is quite an accomplishment, but it hardly rates with the electrifying and decisive victories of the other Judges who ruled before him. In fact, when the Bible tells us that the “dead that he slew in his death were more than he slew in his life,” it is not meant as a compliment, but rather as a commentary that Samson did not put up the “big numbers” like the other Judges did.

And so again, is Samson, the darling of the masses, somehow overrated? Let us not jump to hasty conclusions. After all, we opened this article by saying that Yaakov Avinu himself saw Samson’s potential to be the Messiah. In addition, in comparison to all the other Judges mentioned in the Book of Judges, Samson has by far the most space allotted to him.

This brings us to another difficult question. During his lifetime, Samson was scorned by his own people to such an extent that we find no parallel to it with any other Judge. At one point, fellow Jews even turn him over to the Philistines. Since his support among the people is virtually non-existent, he is reduced to carrying out partisan-style attacks against the enemy instead of leading an army against them. Why should the Bible dedicate so many chapters and stories to a Judge who had absolutely no supporting cast?

Why is he a candidate for Messiah?

Despite all the above questions and doubts, it is clear that Samson is indeed someone very special. Even before his birth, an angel of G-d came to his parents and spoke of the birth of this extraordinary son, “for a Nazarite to G-d shall the boy be… and he will begin to save Israel from the hand of the Philistines.”

The answer to the riddle of Samson’s greatness lies in the supposed weakness of his not enjoying the support of his people. Even though he was betrayed by his own people, he continued to love them and fight on their behalf. His internal strength and his willingness to stand alone and fight chillul Hashem (The desecration of G-d’s name) are why he is described as “beginning to save Israel”.

In the same way that Moses never turned his back on the Jewish People, despite their endless accusations against him, Samson remained firm in his faith and Ahavat Yisrael. At the same time, the people disparaged him as irresponsible and violent, a hot-blooded lunatic who “makes things worse” by fermenting hatred against the Jews on the part of the Philistines. Samson paid no heed to them. For this, he would eventually be recognized as the great leader he was.

And while it is true that he sinned, Samson physically sacrificed himself for the Jewish people. Even in his last moments – when he stood weakened, blinded, and bound – what grieved him was not his personal suffering, but rather the tremendous desecration of G-d’s name that this was causing. When Yaakov saw all this – placing G-d’s honor over his own, putting his people’s pain before his own – he understood that such a man is worthy of being the Messiah.
